Tip: The Brenner Basis Tunnel Info Center provides information about future plans for the railway.
The route over the Brenner Pass was long and arduous until the construction of the Brenner railway. The story began in 1867 when a locomotive first steamed over the mountain pass. The construction of this Alpine railway, a master technological achievement at that time, was completed by 20.000 workers in just three and a half years. Alpinists used the good train connection for their first ascents, to climb, for example, the Olperer.
